PLDD means that under the guidance of C-arm X-ray or CT, 16G or 18G puncture needle is inserted into the diseased cervical/lumbar intervertebral disc, 200-800μm optical fiber is introduced through the puncture needle, and then laser treatment system is started to emit laser to vaporize part of the nucleus pulposus of the intervertebral disc, thus reducing the pressure in the intervertebral disc.
effects on disc herniation include partial vaporization of the nucleus pulposus, reduction of intradiscal pressure, and retraction of the hernia. A laser beam is introduced through a very thin optical fiber inside the needle under fluoroscopy or CT guidance. The procedure is performed in a hospital using local anesthesia and/or mild analgesia, does not require surgical incision, does not require stitch removal, and allows you to get back to work immediately.
Patients improved significantly in a short time after the PLDD, which can be explained by two primary factors as follows. Laser irradiation vaporized a small amount of nucleus pulposus (NP) in the affected disc, which resulted in an immediate reduction of the intradisc pressure, thus resulting in gradual withdrawal of disk compression on the nerve root.
