Advantages of Laser Treatment for Granulomas

Advantages of Laser Treatment for Granulomas

Granuloma is a benign, vascular lesion commonly seen in the oral mucosa, usually as an overgrown sarcoma caused by local irritation. Surgical resection is the most common and effective treatment. Dentists will use surgical tools to completely remove the granuloma. The surgery is usually performed under local anesthesia and the patient may need some time to recover after surgery. Surgical excision ensures complete removal of the lesion and reduces the likelihood of recurrence.

Laser therapy is a relatively new treatment method that uses laser light instead of a traditional scalpel to remove granulomas. Laser treatment has the following advantages:

Non-Contact Treatment: Laser treatment is a non-contact treatment that reduces the discomfort and risk of infection that can occur when coming into contact with traditional surgical knives.

Less local anesthesia required: Because laser treatments are usually painless or mildly uncomfortable, patients may require less local anesthesia, reducing the use of anesthesia compared to traditional surgery.

Precise cutting: Lasers are able to cut tissue with a high degree of precision, giving doctors more control over the treatment process and helping to minimize damage to surrounding normal tissue.

Coagulation: Lasers not only cut tissue but also coagulate blood vessels. This feature helps reduce the risk of bleeding during surgery and makes the procedure safer.

Local mild effect: Laser generates relatively little heat during treatment, reducing thermal damage to surrounding tissues and contributing to faster recovery.

Less pain and discomfort: Laser treatments are often associated with less postoperative pain and discomfort, which helps improve patient comfort after surgery.

Faster recovery: Because laser treatment causes less trauma, healing after surgery is usually faster and patients are able to return to their normal lives more quickly.

Avoid or reduce sutures: Because laser treatment typically does not require extensive suturing, patients may avoid the discomfort of postoperative scars and sutures.
